time travel, causality, destiny and the machinery of the universe
Me and a friend recently saw Deja Vu. Its one of those hollywood flicks about time travel - but for some reason this time we questioned it trying to get our own doubts cleared - and as can be expected came up with a bunch of more questions.
So if time travel was possible - and if we could go back to the past - then what would happen ?
Suppose you go back to the past and kill off your own grandfather just before your mother or father were being conceived(scientists call this the grandfather paradox) would you cease to exist suddenly - would you suddenly pop out of existence? If this happens then this would mean there is a definite plan to everything- things come into existence according to a definite plan - and go according to a definite plan. Since matter cannot suddenly cease to exist or cannot suddenly com into existence - there have to be a definite sequence of events for you to come into existence. Thus causality will come into play - at least i think that is the word - now what i understand is that everything is somehow orthe other connected to the another thing on earth so what happens to one effects the other- so suppose as it was shown in the movie - if people could use time travel to avert an accident and save 600 lives then what happens. I say whatever was supposed to happen changes dramatically. That is of course considering what you believe in what I believe -there is a path that is followed by each life, that certain things need to happen so that the whole chain of existence runs right. Where as another person might very well believe that one makes there future each second - at every minute point of life people are given choices and depending on that choice their future is shaped - but if we get down to the fundamental questions of why we are here - I dont think I can answer - life came in to existence because of a freak accident and then just continued an arbitrary path and then evolved to what it is today - but the thing is will so much have happened without no reason at all - may be the lens I am looking through is too prejudiced - Because I am a human being I consider the creation of the earth its history its civilizations are an amazing thing a prized possession for the universe - but seriously if we consider it the universe is absolutley unimaginably huge - small minute things which are happening in distant parts of it are really of no value to it - so whether the earth exists or does not is not a very important questions from that point of view. So all the meaning that we give to our lives is of no use. the universe is on its own cycle of big bangs and big crunches and planets and civilizations will come into existence and go out of existence. Thus the ultimate answer to life would be you are part of the clockwork just see your way through and quietly exit - which makes it pretty useless and makes you feel not needed at all. Pretty depressing actually.
Now coming back to the concept of time- what of it - time is a conception we have come up with to help in our calculations. thus what has happened has that already happened and will never be re lived again that would mean time is like a serial connection just online and going in one direction however I refuse to believe that - i feel its like a parallel connection and in parallel universes the same thing is being relived again and again - but then again this would mean that we are important enough to be conserved in time - hmmmmmm interesting. If every thing that happens is just a lucky coincidence then then life really is just a series of lucky coincidences and calculated choices............ ok my brain isshutting down - i think that was rambling enough for today - tomorrow again we shall continue.
Some ramblings that I noted on the morrow and never published - very erratic now that I read them...
eternity is just an on going process of beginnings and endings just endless cycles - so it is kind of self contained like an eternal mother giving birth - the child dying and the mother giving birth again. thus time - the phrase we use to describe it at least is constantly being produced by a process of regeneration. from our point of view it is created lets say with the big bang and then destroyed with the big crunch(or whatever that is called). but for the process itself it is not a death its just a regeneration, like the phoenix being regenerated from its ashes - it just becomes too old to continue in its present form and thus needs to combine to its simplest elements in order to be able to be reborn and go through the process again - kind of like a watch - you need to wind it up to give it energy to start the whole process again. Only in this case the watch is a self winding watch.
Does time flow in one direction only - if time is simply a process of energy flowing then does energy simply flow in one direction - no it can be induced to flow in alternating currents but i am guessing it cannot be a steady stream int he opposite direction it can noly be leaps and jumps now can an alternating current traveling at the speed of light go back on itself to influence itself? good question so can light influence itself?light traveling at the speed of light can it influence itself - no because one beam of light is not going faster than the other. Can light's speed be slowed down? I am guessing no - to generate light the particles will have to move at the same speed if that indeed is what they are doing.
Energy is the key to everything?
Things to look up worm holes, string theory(edward witten) - and professors researching this.
motion creates time - thus an object at rest will have no motion will not lose any energy and will not need to die will be eternal will be static actually, thus if we go out in space far away remain static and then come back we have time traveled in respect to earth. but then motion bring s matter to life? without motion matter ceases to exist? without motion time ceases to exist without motion no regenerative process ceases to exist without motion time comes to a standstill?
